Our Communities

A sense of community is what all West Kootenay cities, towns and villages share. The people are friendly and always have a smile ready for you and the communities are wholly responsible for giving you that "at home" feeling. Here are a few communities that are within reach of Osprey Point.

Castlegar, BC

Settled in the Ootischenia Valley on the east shore of the rumbling Columbia River in 1908, Russian political immigrants named Doukhobors established a vibrant communal enterprise. Today, Castlegar, the "Heart of the Kootenays", is home to a vast amount of historic attractions such as the Doukhobor Museum and Zuckerberg Island and refects a vibrant and diverse mix of industry, commerce and recreation. And with quick and nearby access to Osprey Point on the Lower Arrow Lake, Castlegar is your closest major center for stocking up before you head out the lake.

Trail, BC

Steeped in rich mining history, Trail is known as one of BC's most important economic centers. Beginning as a frontier and quickly transforming to a settlement when a small copper smelter opened in 1896, right where industrious Cominco processes zinc and lead today. A very Italian city, Trail celebrates its heritage and character and is also known for it's knack of producing great sports figures in hockey and baseball. Much history can be celebrated by a walk through the Trail Memorial Centre and the Sports Hall of Memories.

Nelson, BC

The "Queen City of the Kootenays", Nelson, is overflowing with storybook charm, stunning scenery, eccentric artisans and a history like no other. Also known as the best "Small Arts Town in Canada", Nelson's weekly markets and annual summer Artwalk through the downtown core is a main reason why locals and tourists love this city. With over 40 restaurants, you are sure to find good food and atmosphere no matter what time of the day it is. And Lakeside Park, with its Streetcar 23 tour, big play park, tennis and bocce ball courts, boat launch and huge sandy beach make Nelson, on the shore of Kootenay Lake and only a 30 minute drive from Castlegar, an excellent town to visit on a day trip from Osprey Point.
